Dachshund.org gets a lot of email asking for medical help from people who have dachshunds that have been hit with high medical costs. Often times the only way a dog can be helped is if the owner signs the dog over to a rescue organization in order to be able to help their dog. This is so sad for those who truly love their dog but just don't have the funds to help them. Disk surgery is one of the reasons people have to give up their dog because surgery often costs anywhere from $2500 to $5000.
If you'd like to donate to the cause, Dachshund.org will only help legitimate people with can prove their dog has been to a vet and that they do not have the funds to cover the cost of treatment.
